Spectrometers

Spectrometer A (X/Q-band) is available to all users. It can be configured for CW and pulse X-band measurements. All users can operate the spectrometer at room temperature. Further training is required to operate the spectrometer at low temperature. Organic radical/spin trapping experiments and measurements requiring light excitation are best performed using the cylindrical resonator. High sensitivity measurements, particularly at low temperature, are best performed with the rectangular (SHQE) resonator. Parallel polarization measurements require the dual mode resonator. For experienced users Spectrometer A can be reconfigured to perform pulse Q-band measurements.

Spectrometer B (X/Q/W-band) is restricted to experienced users. It can be configured for CW and pulse X-band measurements, CW-Q-band measurements and CW and pulse W-band measurements. The spectrometer can operate at both low and room temperature. Laser (YAG) excitation is available i.e. transient EPR.

User Caegories

GroupDescription   /   RequirementsExperiments
General User (E) All users, requires fundamental training only. Room temperature CW-X-Band. In situ illumination (excludes laser), in situ electrochemistry, in situ gas exchange.
Cryogenic Use (F) Operation of liquid nitrogen / liquid helium cryostats. Requires additional local training and completion of cryogens safety course (ANU). Operation of CW-X-Band cryostats at liquid nitrogen or liquid helium depending on requirements.
Experienced Use (G) All other functions. Requires extensive training and experience. Laser work requires LASER safety course completions and eye test (ANU). Q and W-Band spectrometers. Pulse EPR spectroscopy. Laser operation. (additional training required per task).
